<p>TheproblemofevilisperhapsoneofthemostcommonargumentsagainsttheexistenceofGod,anditholdsmuchweightespeciallyforthosewhohaveexperiencedsomekindofhardshipintheirlife.HowcananOmnibenevolentGodpermiteviltoexist?ThefaithfulwilltypicallyretortwithargumentsofhowGodgaveusfreewill,andhowweliveinafallenworld.Theseargumentsarevalid,buttheydon't get to the heart of the dilemma, which is the other person'sinabilitytoseehowGodcancreatemoregoodfromtheevilshepermitstoexist.</p>
<p>Now,backwhenIwasanAtheistIenjoyedwatchingaYouTubechannelcalled<i>Darkmatter2525</i>.Thecreatormakesfunanimationswhereheattemptstodebunkreligion,primarilyChristianity-althoughI've seen him do videos on Islam as well. One of his videos, titled <i><a href="https://yewtu.be/watch?v=XUhIvqWyrPM" target="_blank" >If God Answered Prayers</a></i> is ironically a great video explaining butterfly theory such that one can easily see how God can permit evils and still derive good from them 'downthedaisychain'.Thevideogivesthescenarioofalittlegirlwhoasksgodforakitten.Goddoesnotcomplyandexplainstohisangel,Jeffrey,howtheeventualconsequenceofgivingthatgirlakittenwouldcauseapersonvitalforpreventingtheThirdWorldWartoneverexist.Assuch,bynotgivingthelittlegirlthekitten,godleaveswayforapersontobebornwhowillpreventaworld-endingcatastrophe.</p>
<p>Now,thevideohasitsissues,andobviouslywasnotmadewiththeintentionofprovidingasolutiontotheproblemofevil.HisintentionisinsteadtoarguethatGod<i>never</i>answersprayers.HetriestoarguethatbecausegrantingeventhesmallestprayerwouldhavesuchmassiveconsequencesforHisplan,thatitwouldbeimplausibleorincredibleforGodtoaccountforit.This,ofcourse,issimplythefallacyofpersonalincredulity.Godisbeyondspaceandtime,itisnotasthoughHehadadeadlinebywhichHehadtofinishHisdivineplan.ThesecondargumenthemakesisthetypicalargumentthatGodcannothaveadivineplanandallowusfreewill.Ofcourse,therearesomeChristiandenominationsthathavechosenoneortheother,butCatholicsknowbothfromSacredScriptureandfromSacredTraditionandtheMagisteriumoftheChurchthatbothcananddocoexist.Therearemanywaystoskinthiscat,butmypreferredmethodistogiveanexamplethat's closer to us. I'mfairlycertainthatthereissomeoneinyourlifethatyouknowverywell.Sowell,infact,thatyoucanpredicthowtheywillreacttocertainstimuli.Yet,theabilitytoknowtheirreactiondoesnotmeantheyarewithoutfreewill.Now,ifwearetoconsiderGodwhonotonlycreatedyou,butwasalsopresentatallmomentsofyourlifeandknowsyouevenbetterthanyouknowyourself,woulditbesurprisingifGodweretoknowexactlyhowyouwillrespondtocertainstimulifromyourenvironment?AddtothisthedimensionthatGodisbeyondbothspaceand(moreimportantly)time,andwecanseehowGodalreadyknowswhatyouwillchooseoutofyourownfreewill.</p>
